Dear Barimama

We lost our beloved grandmother Ramindra Ajit Singh, our Barimama, on Febuary 15, 2013. This is a little tribute I wrote for her, the day after.

Dear Barimama,

There are no words to express what I feel right now.

Although we began this relationship a mere 8 years ago, it has influenced me deeply and I truly believe we shared a special relationship.

It was surprising with what ease we could talk for hours, whether it was you sharing your poems of Bhai Vir Singh ji, or discussing the latest book I was reading. When I sat across from your chair, the age difference between us dissolved and we became friends.  You broke down barriers of age, gender and even marital status. Although you lost your beloved Saathi (as you referred to him) more than 30 years ago, you didn't resign yourself to a subdued, reserved life, in fact, you came out stronger. You were kind, affectionate, intelligent, wise, a premi of Babaji and oh so confident!

At an age when most people choose to retire and lead a quiet life, you became more active and productive choosing to lead a busy life. You were always in Command!

When we travelled to Canada together, at the age of 85, you wowed people at our reception, with your beautiful words and your amazing presence. Although, Madhav and I were the groom and bride, you became the centre of attention. It was natural, you were the star wherever you went.

Barimama, although you are no longer physically present, you shall remain with us forever. When Karambir sings, we will tell him his great grand mother gave him this gift. When Mama makes your famous recipes, we shall see your silhouette in the kitchen. When Madhav keeps a paath or kirtaan at home, we shall seek your blessings. Whenever I write, I shall think of you.

Barimama, you inspired everyone who knew you but, above all we shall aspire to have your zest for life.
From Mama, Madhav, Karambir and the rest of our family, we love you and miss you!! Please shower us with your blessings!!

Love,
Simrit
